THE MERCENÁRIAS ARE COMING TO BERLIN!
The occasion is a concert by the legendary Brazilian post-punk band Mercenárias. Founded in São Paulo in 1982, the band was one of the first queer-feminist groups in what was then an almost exclusively male scene and remains one of the most important bands in the Brazilian underground scene to this day. Thanks to support from the Goethe-Institut, Mercenárias is coming to Berlin to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their groundbreaking debut album “Cadê as Armas?” —as part of their 40th-anniversary tour, which they will kick off at the ¡MASH-UP! anniversary party at SO36 (Oct. 2).
We’ll start the evening listening to the musical works from the improvisation workshop led in the afternoon by Sandra Coutinho (check event in calendar if you want to participate). This will be followed by concerts by M.i.p.V, the instrumental guitar-drums duo led by the German-Brazilian guitarist Laura.aLL—who usually performs with rotating drummers; this evening, Pitchu Ferraz will be on drums, who also plays with the Mercenárias—as well as Restless, the Brazilian-Australian noisy punk duo featuring Adriessa Souza (Anti-Corpos) and Eilis Frawley. The evening will conclude with a performance by the Mercenárias.
Afterward, the party continues with a DJ set by The Lion—Marie Leão’s alias—featuring indie, queer pop, and alternative rock.
The event is part of the festival week celebrating Berlin’s Tag der Clubkultur .
¡MASH-UP! Multigender/Multiworld originated in 2011 on a makeshift truck at the queer demonstration “Transgenialer CSD” in Kreuzberg. A few BIPoC and migrant FLINTA* people living in Berlin came together because they longed for queer-feminist perspectives from the Global South in Berlin’s party scene.
Since 2016, the collective has been organizing its eponymous party series and has since brought over 70 artists from Europe, Africa, Asia, and North and Latin America to the stage.
