Marie Leão likes unusual fusions. Her DJ-sets are a crossover, moving in the spectrum of electronic music, with a special focus on tech-house, electro and bass-music with loads of intersectionalities and transtropical/postcolonial beats. Antennas and roots. Being also a drummer, she has a great sense for timing, dancefloor dynamics and emotionality. “It’s the off-beats that make clubbers fly and shake to the ecstasy on the dancefloor. Hot is the new cool!”, she says.

A versatile DJ on the cutting edge of the trends and technique, an artist with a strong knowledge of music. No borders! Owning a huge music collection makes her able to spin at virtually almost every kind of party, depending on the occasion. Her musical reach goes from electronic music to pop, from punk to pinky queer tunes, from disco to indie-rock. She has also tons of hits and evergreens.

Marie Leão has also made a name in the Brazilian music scene in Berlin. Her forte is the electronic pop made in Brazil, in particular the alternative productions that promote a mix of traditional Brazilian music with funk carioca, electro, house, trap and drum’n’bass.

Marie Leão is the co-founder and booker of the queer-feminist party-collective ¡MASH-UP! Multigender Multiworld.

The drummer
Besides being a DJ, Marie Leão is also a drummer and a percussionist. The girl from Rio de Janeiro grew up listening to soul, funk, disco, jazz, classical music, 60’s soundtracks and, of course, samba. In the 80’s, punk blew her mind – she became a part of the punk and post-punk scene in Rio and São Paulo. Her musical career started back in 1991 as a drummer in the grunge band Dash, in Rio, and as a journalist and music reviewer for magazines and news agencies.

Arriving in Berlin in 1995, she have played drums in the band Shottas (1998-2011) with bassist Sandra Coutinho from the legendary band Mercenárias (from São Paulo), in DJ Ipek’s oriental-house project Akasha Crew (2004-2006) and in the trip-rock project Músicas intermináveis para Viagem (M.i.p.V, 2006-2012) with extraordinaire guitarist Laura L., among others.

She currently hits the drums in the German-Brazilian manguebit band Rainhas do Norte, in the cult combo WonderSka and more recently in the post-rock band They Joan Darx
