Beyond Innocence* is a joint project between two long-established venues and cultural projects in Berlin: ausland and Theater Thikwa. At the heart of the project is the artistic collaboration between professional musicians from Berlin's improvisation scene and a group of actors with and without disabilities. Over nine monthly workshops led by experienced protagonists from Berlin's renowned independent scene, a collective working process takes place, culminating in a joint concert in June 2026. This radically inclusive project questions concepts of talent, musicality and normality. Against the backdrop of the utopia of a society shaped jointly and equally by all people, Beyond Innocence* is intended to be the starting point for long-term collaboration between the participating artists.

*The name of the project focuses on the word "innocence", whose meaning has become moremulti-layered in recent years. Does the word inspire images of purity and naiveté? Does it conjure up images of ignorance or ineffectual existence? Or do we think of “innocence” in relation to the increasing complexity of “justice"? We want to question, affirm and challenge innocence without being biased by its meanings, and at the same time without being polarised by its human divisions. This is the beginning of a story that continues to question and challenge all involved, including Thikwa’s community and those in the music scene(s) that ausland represents.
