Beyond Innocence

Beyond Innocence began in Japan in 1996 and continues today in Berlin as a name for artistic activities centred on improvisation and encounters across different practices.
From 1996 to 2007, Festival BEYOND INNOCENCE was held annually in Japan. With improvisation as its key, the festival invited artists from Japan and abroad, regardless of whether they were established or unknown, bringing together different musical genres and generations over two to three days each year. During the same period, Beyond Innocence was also continuously involved in concert curation, management and organisation.
In 2025–2026, Beyond Innocence Workshop Series 2025–2026 was realised in Berlin with funding from Musikfonds, with ausland as the applicant organisation and Theater Thikwa as co-producer. The series consisted of ten Music Improvisation Workshops at Theater Thikwa and a final concert at ausland.
Beyond Innocence currently develops and curates concerts, performances and other projects around improvisation, listening and the question of what we recognise as music.
